if i were to build a vacation house by the beach, i would probably want to build one like this. spent a few hours today making some sketches of the beach house (not the band)
more after the jump
provided that i can afford it, i'd definitely wanna build a beach house just for fun.
what better way to start a career in the real estate developer and architecture than to build your own first home?
anyway, here are some drawings i made today. the linework is pretty bad considering i made all the drawings on my bed (and dont have autocad at the moment).
i was reading a book about craig ellwood and suddenly got inspired to design a modernist-influenced house (i have some drawings for an actual house but have yet to come to a level i like, hence the house no. 2 is the beach house).
but anyway, obviously, to build a beach house i would want to have the facade facing the water to be all window casement (floor to ceiling) to maximize the amount of light into the space (which is only about 24' x 45').
when i finished drawing the perspective views, i realized that the house looks sort of like the Investec Media Center of Lord's Cricket Ground i drove by in London two winters ago. oh well.
i really like the floating steps ellwood installed in a couple of his houses (can't find images for now). and the h lorenzo store on robertson blvd in west hollywood also had the floating steps installed >>>
i also want the house to seem as though it really is floating. only that the foundation under does not extend all the way out.
for now the house consists of one bedroom, one bathroom, one wardrobe, laundry partition, open kitchen, island/ bar, open work space and living room.
each bay is about 15' x 12'.
the floor and exterior walls are made of concrete.
the concrete walls act as shear walls in the north south direction
the moment frames act against shearing forces in the east west direction
the beach front facade is of full height double glazed fixed storefront system.
the storefront in the living room consists of sliding glass doors.
since the house is pretty small, having guests overnight can be tricky.
so what i think i wanna do is install movable curtains separating the living room
from the kitchen and from the study.
